Ergonomic issues

If you have an issue with your workstation that is causing you physical discomfort, it is likely that it can be corrected with minor adjustments. Contact Frank Pekarski, Manager of Safety and Environmental Compliance, or at ext. 2406. He will assess your workstation and make recommendations or provide ergonomic devices (keyboard tray, monitor risers, etc.) to improve your situation.

Furniture

These guidelines are intended to outline the process for procuring furniture and highlight the offices/persons responsible for these purchases.

For the purposes of these guidelines, furniture needs will be broken down into the following categories:

  1. Offices – this includes desk chair, desk, side chairs, bookcases, work and/or occasional tables
  2. E&G Lounge Spaces – this includes soft seating, occasional tables, bookcases
  3. Classrooms – this includes tables, chairs, tablet arm chairs, fixed seating, desk chairs, podiums

Offices

When occupants of an office change, there is frequently a need to update the furniture. This is occasionally necessitated by a lack of ergonomic features in the existing furniture. The occupant’s hiring department is responsible for making a request to the Facilities Purchasing Department for new furniture. Facilities shall work with the requestor to the specifications for the appropriate furniture for the space and work habits of the occupant. Facilities will make the purchase and will be responsible for the installation of the furniture. Facilities is provided an Annual Capital budget for the replacement of E&G furniture.

Offices – Standard Costs

The standard desk chair supplied by the college costs approximately $450. Should the occupant desire a chair costing more than that amount, the occupant shall be responsible for covering the additional cost.

The standard desk unit shall be a 6’ x 6’ “L – shaped” unit costing approximately $2,500. If additional features or size of unit is desired, the occupant shall be responsible for the additional cost.

Furniture that is fully functional and ergonomically correct shall not be replaced out of the Annual Furniture budget. Should a department desire new furniture on aesthetic grounds, Facilities shall assist with the development of specifications and the purchase of the furniture, but the requesting department will be responsible for funding any and all expenses.

E&G Lounge Spaces

Facilities shall be responsible for assessing the replacement need by establishing a replacement schedule for all lounge spaces. In conjunction with the department located near or around the lounge space, Facilities shall specify the type and brand of furniture and coordinate the selection process. Facilities shall make installation arrangements and shall have an Annual Capital budget to cover the expense of the furniture.

Classrooms

Facilities shall be responsible for assessing the replacement need by establishing a replacement schedule for all classrooms. In conjunction with the department that is the heaviest user of the space or with the Registrar’s Office, Facilities shall specify the type and brand of furniture and coordinate the selection process. Facilities shall make installation arrangements and shall have an Annual Capital budget to cover the expense of the furniture.
